MINUTES

MEDICAL FACULTY ASSEMBLY

October 7, 1997.

1) The minutes of July, August and September were approved with two corrections in the August 5th meeting:

Dr. Dennis O'Leary represented the Department of Otolaryngology.

On item 4 " neither DR. KAUFMAN NOR Dr. Van Der Muelen were present."

2) Faculty Contracts. Dr. Leslie Bernstein addressed the Assembly. She explained that failure to come to a consensus on revisions to the Faculty Handbook resulted in new contracts not being issued. Letters are to be sent to the Fcaulty of the School of Medicine once she can extract all the data on salaries - she is handling all of this job because of Mr. Strippoli's serious illness and absence. Following this address the MFA unamiously passed resolutions 1997-98-002 and 1997-98-003 with only minor revisions (final drafts attached). These resolutions will be delivered to the Dean immediately and will be presented at the next FEC meeting.

3) Faculty Salaries. Dr. Peter Hesseltine presented a resolution (distributed) on "Ensuring Fair and Equitable Salary for Full Time Faculty." There was extensive disussion by the representatives. Pending revision of some of the language, the resolution was tabled by a vote of the representatives.

4) Meeting of the MFA with LCME.  The MFA approved the following representatives to meet with the LCME site visitors:

        Dr. Kathryn Challoner
        Dr. Robert. Stellwagen
        Dr. Harvey Kaslow

7) A letter from Dr. Cheryl Craft in response to MFA Resolution 1997-98-001 was circulated. Dr. Albrecht has responded in writing to this letter expressing his disappointment that the efforts, excellence and teaching of few remaining longtime dedicated faculty of the Department of Cell and Neurobiology were not recognized. Dr. Craft has promised to send a response. Dr. Challoner stated that all the MFA recognizes and applauds the dedicated and continuing efforts of these long time Faculty and promised that when the addendum to Dr. Craft's letter arrives, it will be widely circulated.

Dr. Van Der Muellen and Mr. Doug Bagley have been asked to give a County up-date. If the meeting can be successfuly re-scheduled, the date will be widely circulated.
