A Recommendation proposed at the
September 17, 1997 meeting of the Academic Senate

WHEREAS, reliable and ready access to the written rules and procedures of
the University and its Schools would benefit its governance and
administration; and

WHEREAS, accountability in governance and administration is well-served by
a written record of events reliably and readily available to all who are
interested; and

WHEREAS, the function of libraries is to archive and organize documents so
that they are reliably and readily available;

THEREFORE, the Academic Senate recommends to the University of Southern
California that:

1. The Library of the University be designated an entity responsible for
archiving documents relating to the governance and administration of the
University and its Schools and other subdivisions.

2. The Library Faculty of the University prepare, with consultation with
the University community, a plan with a budget sufficient to carry out this
responsibility.

3. The plan from the Library provide not only the archiving and
safe-keeping of written documents, but also for the posting of documents in
electronic format.

4. The plan be made available to the University community in a speedy
fashion, preferably by March 1, 1998.
