Letter from MFA Executive Board

October 1, 1996

Joseph P. Van Der Meulen
Interim Dean
USC School of Medicine

Dear Dean Van Der Meulen:

The Executive Board of the Medical Faculty Assembly (MFA) has been assured by Dr. R. Kaufman and County Administration that the funding to retain the 29 County physicians impacted by the June 27th decision has now been provided by the County and is guaranteed until the end of the current fiscal year.

Faculty who were non-tenured had their University positions terminated by the June 27th action and have lost their University appointments and their rights to University benefits. Despite this, they have been asked, and have continued to perform exactly the same job functions as before, serving as full members of the academic faculty.

Therefore, in accordance with Resolution 96/97-01 of the Academic Senate and in a sense of fairness and humane action, we request that the University positions of these non-tenured faculty be immediately restored, with restoration of their full academic privileges and benefits. Thank you for your prompt action on this very important matter.

Sincerely yours,

Robert H. Stellwagen, Ph.D.
President of the MFA
For the Executive Board of the MFA
